Add a product

Add a product from Product View, name the person accountable for it, and add the items it's made of.

What a product holds

A product is something your organization builds, such as Member onboarding. Your first product comes with your organization; see Create your organization. Each product holds:

A number
Products are numbered in order: 1, 2, 3. Items are numbered under their parent, so product 2's first capability is 2-1.
An owner
Your organization directly or, while Teams are on, one of its teams.
An accountable owner
The person who answers for the product.
A purpose
What the product is for, if you give one.
Its items
The capabilities, features, and components it's made of. A new product has none.
A Backlog initiative
BLOM makes it with the product. Every Job is in exactly one initiative.

For how products and items fit together, read Hierarchy in the BLOM method.

Who can add one

An Administrator. If you're an Editor or a Viewer, Add a product doesn't show for you; ask one of your organization's Administrators. People and access explains the roles.

Add it

  1. Open Product View

In the rail, under Views, select Product View.

  2. Select Switch product, then Add a product

Beside the product's name, select Switch product. At the foot of the list, select Add a product.

  3. Name it

Enter its Name, such as Harbor API. While Teams are on, also choose who it's Owned by: your organization directly, or one of its teams.

  4. Choose its accountable owner

Under Accountable owner, choose the person who answers for the product. It starts as you, and you can choose any active person in the organization, such as Grace Hopper.

  5. Say what it's for, and why you're adding it

Purpose (optional) says what the product is for. Reason (required) says why you're adding it, and BLOM records the change with it.

  6. Select Add the product

BLOM gives the product the next number and opens it in Product View.

Add its items

A new product has no items. An Administrator adds the ones that already exist, by hand or from an agent's proposal.

Add them yourself

In Product View, select Product summary, then Add an item. Choose its Level and enter its Name. Under Owner, choose Same as the parent or No owner. Give a Reason (required) and select Add the item. To add items below an item, open its page and select Add an item under it.

Have an agent propose them

In Atlas View, choose the product under Product. Get started then offers a prompt that has Claude Code or Codex draft that product's capabilities from your repository. If you closed Get started, show it again from Your profile. A connected agent sends its list as a proposal, which waits under Proposed items on Product summary. Nothing in it is an item until an Administrator accepts it, with Accept selected or Accept all; Discard drops it.

Work that creates a new item adds it when its Job first needs it. See Items and Jobs.

Rename, move, or retire it later

On Product summary, an Administrator selects Rename the product, enters the new Name and a Reason (required), and selects Rename.

An Administrator can also move a product into a team, out of one, or between teams. It keeps its number, its work, and its history; see Teams.

A product you stop building is retired, never deleted. A Job targets it with the effect Retire, and once nothing active depends on it, the product stays in the hierarchy as retired, apart from active products, with its documents and history. A product added by mistake, with no items, documents, tasks, or evidence, can be removed instead.
