Brand Guide

The Brand Guide holds your brand, skin, and design-system designs, approved and in Draft, apart from your screen designs.

In BLOMDesign LabBrand Guide

What it holds

The Brand Guide lists every design whose kind is Brand, Skin, or Design system, in every product you can read, unless it's archived. It has two sections, Approved and Draft, and each groups its designs by kind:

Brand
The color, type, space, and other tokens your screens are drawn with.
Skins
How a screen wears the brand: each skin is a set of tokens over it.
Design system
The components your screens are built from, on the brand's tokens.

Links at the top jump to Approved and Draft, with their counts. Archive opens Design Lab's Archive, since an archived design always goes there, never to a section of the Brand Guide.

Each design belongs to one product, and its card names it. Use Product to show one product's designs, and Find to match a design's name, summary, screen, or Job. Screen designs aren't here: they're in Approved designs and Draft.

How a team uses it

Keep the designs your screens build on in one place, beside the screens themselves. A brand design might be a page of color and type samples, a skin the same page in another theme, and a design system a gallery of components. Post each as you'd post a screen design: a built prototype in a .zip, or a single .html file.

Everyone who can read the product sees the approved version of each, and what's still being explored in Draft. The cards are the same as elsewhere in Design Lab, with a live preview and Open in a new tab.

Note. BLOM hosts these designs and records their approvals. Applying them to your screens stays with your team, in your own code.

Add a design to it

  1. Open the dialog

In any Design Lab place, select Post a design, and choose the file and the product. Post a design covers the file and every field.

  2. Choose its kind

In Kind, choose Brand, Skin, or Design system.

  3. Post it

Select Post the design. It shows in the Brand Guide's Draft section.

From the CLI, add --kind brand, --kind skin, or --kind design_system to design post.

To move a design you posted as a screen, select Change details on its page, change its Kind, and select Save changes. Changing it back to Screen moves it out again.

Change it

When your brand, a skin, or your design system changes, post a new version: select Post a version on its page. The approved version stays approved, and the design shows Newer version, not approved until someone approves the new one.

  • Approve version 3, on the version showing, moves the approval to it, or moves a design in Draft to the Approved section. It takes the Approve level.
  • Return to Draft moves an approved design back to the Draft section. It takes the Approve level.
  • Archive sets a design aside in Design Lab's Archive, and Restore brings it back to the Draft section.

As with any design, approving one of these versions approves it for nothing else. Versions and approval covers each act and who may take it.
