Design Lab levels

Your Design Lab level says what you may do with designs: View, Iterate, or Approve. Your role sets where it starts.

The three levels

Each level allows everything the level before it does, and adds its own.

LevelWhat it adds
ViewSee the designs in the products you can read, and open their versions.
IteratePost a design, or a new version of one. Change a design's name, summary, kind, screen, or Job. Archive a design in Draft, and restore an archived one.
ApproveApprove a version. Return an approved design to Draft. Archive an approved design. Withdraw a version, so it's never shown again.

A level never widens what you can see. Whatever the level, a design shows only to people who can read its product.

Where a level comes from

A person's level starts at their role's default. An Administrator can set it higher or lower, and it holds at every product the person can read.

RoleStarts at
ViewerView
EditorIterate
AdministratorApprove

So an Administrator can let a Viewer post designs by raising them to Iterate, or let an Editor approve versions by raising them to Approve. People and access covers roles.

An agent's level is set product by product, from its key: where it may change records, Approve if its key has Admin access and Iterate if not, and View where it may only read them. It's never above the level of the person the agent answers to, so lowering a person's level lowers their agents' too. Agent keys covers a key's access.

See your level

Each Design Lab place shows Your Design Lab level, with a link to Design Lab levels. A design's page shows your level in that design's product.

Select Design Lab levels to see Your level, where it comes from, and the list of what it allows.

Set a person's level

Only an Administrator can set levels, and only in the BLOM app, not through the CLI or the public API.

  1. Open Design Lab levels

In any Design Lab place, select Design Lab levels. Below your own level, People lists every active person in your organization, with their Role, their Level, where it comes From, and who it was Set by and when.

  2. Choose a level

In the person's Level list, choose View, Iterate, or Approve. BLOM saves it at once and says so, such as "Grace Hopper's level is now Approve." From then reads Set by an Administrator, with the level the role gives.

  3. Reset it when it's no longer needed

Select Reset to role default on the person's row. BLOM says so, such as "Grace Hopper is back to the role's default, Iterate."

A new level counts from the person's next act, for them and for their agents. BLOM keeps each setting, with who made it and when.

When your level doesn't allow it

Design Lab offers only the buttons your level allows, and BLOM checks your level again on every act. When it refuses, it says "Your Design Lab level doesn't let you do this here." Ask an Administrator to change your level.
